OK Go - White Knuckles

Man, I love their videos. The whole thing was shot in one fluid take. Take 72 to be exact. Amazing. Gizmodo has a rundown of how they pulled it off. (via)

Pencil Tip Micro Sculptures
Amazingly intricate sculptures carved into the lead of a pencil (!!) by Dalton Ghetti.  I especially like the saw (pictured above) as it makes use of both the lead and the wood.

What different sorting algorithms sound like

Surprisingly cool ‘audibilization’ of different sorting algorithms. Almost cool enough to make me want to relearn them.

Color, Photos, and One Fuzzy Little Boy in a Field
Nice post by Merlin Mann on the effects of a color photograph in an era of black and white.
When done well, these images help repudiate the implicit modern reading that pre-color photography realistically captured the simple but alien lives of people who were neither as complex, interesting, nor sophisticated as we CMYK people are.

Perseid Meteor Shower Failure (by ph dee)

This time lapse video was meant to showcase the Perseid meteor shower.  Not too many meteors to be seen, they’re mainly overshadowed by planes and satellites… but it’s beautiful and majestic nonetheless. (via)

New growth from a fig “cutting”.
Having had at the time no absolutely idea how to take a proper cutting, we took an 8 inch shoot that was half old (brown) and half new (green) and had gigantic leaves (suitable for genitalia coverage).  Well, it didn’t take long to realize that those leaves wouldn’t last so I snipped them off and was left with a 8 inch long twig.  Hmm…
We decided to plop it in some water and hope for the best.  After a few days, lo and behold, some white nubby roots are popping out.  Two weeks later and a fully formed leaf is exploding into the world, evidence of the life contained within a twig.

Oil on Destin Beach (via Duncan Davidson)

Shocking.  I accidentally poured gasoline down my leg once and couldn’t wash it off until a few minutes later.  My leg burned the rest of the day.

The French word frisson describes something English has no better word for: a brief intense reaction, usually a feeling of excitement, recognition, or terror.

This blog of mine is undoubtedly a byproduct of my quest for, and empirical “proof” of my attainment of, ephemeral slices of frisson.  But while each post here might only represent a fleeting moment of reaction, I like to think that the accumulation and archival of such seemingly disparate moments has the potential of leading to some deeper, less cursory recognition.

I nevertheless relate completely to Ebert’s desire to ensure that his capacity for sustained and complex thought and attention not be completely supplanted by his quest for frison.
