Iran’s continued election turmoil - The Big Picture
Comments on The Big Picture are often asinine gut reactions, but comment #8 from this collection really struck me as something profound.
These beautiful pictures helped me place a face on the Iranian people. No longer do I view Iran as Ahmadinejad but instead I view it as the collection of all these people pictured.
I’ve seen a few films from Iranians and a few documentaries shot in Iran, and was well aware that Iran is full of intelligent and worldly people who want nothing to do with the current theocratic regime, but the current activities do a wonderful job of making this clear to the global population.
Human landscapes from above - The Big Picture
How cool would it be to have a toothpick model of this? Another great collection of photos from The Big Picture.
25 Great Calvin and Hobbes Strips.
My favorite part of visiting my maternal grandparents when I was a kid was drawing with my grandfather and reading Calvin and Hobbes books.
Star Wars: The Old Republic
Atlantis and Hubble Solar Transit
I’m a bit late linking to this, but it’s still a great image by Thierry Legault.
Spider vs. Bee... BBC vs. National Geographic
The Virtual Ranger comments on the difference in style between a BBC (British) and a National Geographic (US) clip with similar topics.
I (and many others I’m sure) think this stylistic difference permeates all forms of television, from nature to comedy to news. Especially in fact to news, the typical US take of which I find unbearably sensational.

I-Movix SprintCam v3 NAB 2009 showreel
Stunning extreme (1000 FPS) slow motion video. Great soundtrack pairing as well (Gotan Project).
I normally embed videos that I come across, but this one just demands to be seen in the original HD. I also recommend watching full screen.
Can’t really explain how awesome this is. Here’s some of the documentation for the code that controls the laser machine doohickey. (via)
It converts music in a chicken scratch format to numeric code (g-code) for controlling CNC machines. You’ll want to edit the settings at the top of lasermuzak.rb or your robot might go berzerk and start flinging router bits at you. Which reminds me, I will not be held responsible if your robot goes berzerk and starts flinging router bits at you. Seriously, this is the kind of thing that mankind was probably just not meant to do, like flying and buttsex.
